UMP Students Bagged Gold Medal in 2022 ISTEC Competition

UMP Students Bagged Gold Medal in 2022 ISTEC Competition

The Diploma-4 students of the Electromedical Engineering department of Health Science Faculty (FIKES) Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP) won the 2022 International Science, Technology, and Engineering Competition (ISTEC). The competition was followed by over 350 participants from various categories from 18 nations on four continents.

Intan Sakina Ramadhani, a winning team member, presented the research result entitled “Advanced Alarm of Baby Incubator using IoT”. The theme was raised due to premature babies with low birth weight that caused them not to have enough fat reserves to keep their bodies warm. Therefore, it requires an infant incubator to maintain the temperature and humidity of their environment. “The incubator is usually equipped with an alarm. It has a vital function as providing information about the malfunction of sensors or fans, higher temperature, power, and temperature failure,” said Intan.

Based on data, Intan added that several premature infants experienced burns in the palm and back and even died. “The lack of supervision becomes one of the causes of the incident. So it requires additional notification as a real-time report of malfunction in the incubator, where the nurses and the doctors are,” she continued.

The well-organized alarm would be integrated to ensure every malfunction could be prevented or minimized. “The research had developed an infant incubator. By completing the WiFi ESP8266 module, it can provide notifications in Android-based smartphones. So, when the doctor and nurses notice the alarm outside the patient’s room, they can take an emergency action by pressing a button on their handphone,” he said.

The Electromedical Engineering team that won a gold medal comprised Intan Sakina Ramadhani and Annisa Gallela Anjani guided by Royan, S.T., M.T. On the other hand, the team that won a silver medal consisted of Wafiyudin Syifa Fuadi and Naufal Lutfi Hadi directed by Kusnanto Mukti W., S.Si., M.Eng.
