Dr Septi Budi Sartika, MPd, UM Sidoarjo lecturer, innovated the ETNO-STEM model in learning strategic of natural science, which is effective in pandemic for the students and teachers. The model was initiated by the apprehensiveness of the learning system conducted in distanced. Etno-Stem is a learning model from observation to local wisdom.
The word ‘Etno” is related to local wisdom, which becomes a model of natural science learning. Dr Septi tried to raise local understanding to connect with natural science so the students could comprehend it easily. “For example, we learn the concept of pressure. It can be learned through the bag manufacturing industry combined with the natural science of a substance pressure,” she said through a podcast in UMSIDA Menyapa (02/02).
Meanwhile, STEM is derived from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. “Because the demand of the 4.0 industrial revolution era, by the STEM, the students can practice natural science concept, mathematics and technology,” she said.
From the research, Dr Septi and the team had produced the learning instruments development. “ Our goals to produce students with critical thinking and we had made an instrument validated and tested for the students. It resulted in significant increase of students’ score,” she said. Currently, ten schools have applied the concept for the natural science teachers in Muhammadiyah Junior High School in Sidoarjo.
