Best Practice of Business Unit Development

Muhammadiyah Diktilitbang Council held The Best Practice of Business Unit Development in Muhammadiyah-’Aisyiyah Higher Education Institution (PTMA), Saturday (06/02). Also present as the speakers, Dr. Nazaruddin Malik M.Si. from UM Malang, Dr. Suryo Pratolo M.Si. from UM Yogyakarta and Dr. H. Jamaluddin S.Sos. M.Si. from UM Sidenreng Rappang. “By far, a primary financial resource of PTMA is still from Student Tuition earnings; it indeed becomes a challenge for PTMA which should develop their source of funding outside Tuition Fees, one of which through Business Unit Development.

In UMM, the business unit began with the Hotel establishment and continued with establishing a gas station (SPBU), and the other supporting development. This development followed the potential of UMM in supporting the education process, especially students practicum. “What was inherited from several previous Rectors is having a strong intention for the business unit to be used to increase student experience, and the business unit can contribute to the financial source of education funding in UMM,” Dr Nazaruddin explained.

Meanwhile, Dr Suryo Pratolo explained that currently, UMY is developing a business unit through PT Ummah Mandiri Berkemajuan (UMB), which consists of culinary, health service, vehicle rental and many others. “Before COVID-19, this business activity could reach a profit of 13 billion, while during the pandemic, Alhamdulillah, the profit reached 9 billion,” he said. However, he emphasized that they require the use of a system that supports PT Ummah, including a supply plus and demand-pull system. “We chose a demand-pull system, and we need to spin around a bit to create an economic withdrawal through Beduk Mutu (Buying the Qualified Muhammadiyah Products).” The demand-pull is driven by establishing a system consisting of a finance system and other systems.

To complete the two speakers, Dr. Jamaluddin S Sos, Rector of UM Sidenreng Rappang (Sidrap) revealed that supporting the UM Sidrap business unit could be established by an education-oriented system. “Everything is based on the student education and the learning process so that the core businesses that we can develop are in the fields of agriculture, animal husbandry, and fisheries that support student practicums,” he said. The point that can be highlighted is that all business unit activities established by UM Sidrap are carried out by students and are brought by student-oriented guidance.
