Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi Muhammadiyah ‘Muhammadiyah Institute of Economics’ (STIEM) Tanjung Redep is officially transform to Universitas Muhammadiyah Berau after has been launched officially by Vice Governor of East Kalimantan, Hadi Mulyadi and Berau Regent Ad Interim, Agus Tantomo as the first university in Berau, on the local campus (27/12).
Prof. Lincolin Arsyad, Chairman of Muhammadiyah Diktilitbang Council appointed Dr. Syarifudin, M.Pd. as Rector of UM Berau for 2020-2022, online. Being the first University in Berau, the University provides eight undergraduate study programs, including Management, Development Economics, Accounting, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Urban and Regional Planning, Digital Business, and Conservation Biology.
In his speech, Dr. Syarifudin explained the current number of students in UM Berau is 1,577. The majority come from remote villages in Berau and Kaltara who are economically vulnerable to study outside East Kalimantan.
Meanwhile, Vice Governor of East Kalimantan and Berau Regent Ad Interim gave their high appreciation to Muhammadiyah, which has shown a real commitment to developing the Berau community. They both hoped UM Berau would be able to create Berau human resources that can optimize the local potential to build and make progress.
“I am thankful and highly appreciate the university establishment in Berau. It provides opportunities for qualified and competent human resources in many different studies. Therefore, there are many potential sectors to be developed. With these reliable human resources, our local potential can be processed to be competitive,” said Agus Samtomo.
