Universitas Muhammadiyah Karanganyar (UMUKA) is a private university under Muhammadiyah foundation. UM Karanganyar was officially established in 2022 after receiving an Operational Permit from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbud Ristek) RI. It was initiated by the Muhammadiyah Regional Board (PDM) of Karanganyar.

1. The Merger of Three Higher Education Institutions

UMUKA was established from the merger of three private higher education institutions in Central Java. Three institutions comprised Akademi Pariwisata Widya Nusantara Surakarta (AKPARTA) from Widya Nusantara foundation, Akademi Sekretari dan Manajemen (ASMI) Santa Anna from Pendidikan Putera Manunggal Sejahtera, and Akademi Peternakan Karanganyar (APEKA) from Pendidikan Karanganyar foundation. Then, these three higher education institutions merged into one university, Universitas Muhammadiyah Karanganyar (UMUKA).

2. UMUKA was launched by Kemenko PMK

UM Karanganyar was launched by the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs (Kemenko PMK) Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, M.A.P after receiving the Operational Permit on 19 May 2022 through the Ministerial Decree Number 332/E/O/2022, and the submission of the Decree on 7 June 2022 by the Directorate General of Dikti Ristek RI.

3. UNS Former Rector As Chairman of Daily Advisory Board

The former rector of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Prof. Dr. Ravik Karsidi, M.S. has an important role from the first arrangement to the establishment of UMUKA. Currently, besides being the UNS Sociology Professor, he also serves as the Special Assistance to Kemenko PMK. Due to his capabilities and experiences, he was believed to be the one UMUKA needs for its improvement. Therefore, Prof. Dr. Ravik Karsidi, M.Si was trusted to be the Chairman of the Daily Advisory Board (BPH). BPH UMUKA formed by and responsible to Muhammadiyah Central Board has duties and authority to arrange campus improvement plans alongside the UMUKA Boards and Senate.

4. Karanganyar Regent Provides 17 Students Scholarships Until They Graduate

As support for human resource quality improvement in Karanganyar, the Regent, Drs H Juliyatmono, MM provided 17 students scholarships for the first enrollment. The scholarship covers the first semester until they graduate. In addition, to encourage his people to pursue higher education, the Local Government (Pemkab) Karanganyar also disbursed financial aid for 1,000 students at 2,5 million each.
