UMP Geography Education Student Wins International Map Design Competition

Hercules Pungky, a Geography Education Student of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP), won third place in the International Map Design Competition called the 2022 Mappy Challenge. It was organized by a geospatial professional platform, Spatialnode. For this achievement, Hercules beat the world competitors from Europe, Japan, and the US.

The Head of the Geography Education department, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UMP, Dr. Anang Widhi Nirwansyah, M.Sc. mentioned that the Spatialnode is an international community of geospatial practitioners. This community involved experts and professionals in various countries worldwide.

“By proposing Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) in Cirebon region, Hercules who currently prepares his thesis on disaster issue portrays the disaster-prone regions in its coastal area with multicriteria analysis,” he said on Tuesday (20/09), as reported on suaramuhammadiyah.id.

All processes have been done by using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. It was a course in the Geography Education that became a prominent subject of the department. Hercules explained that the project is a developmental work from a session of the GIS course that will support him as a geography teacher or professional. “I hope it can motivate me to develop my ability in processing geospatial data, especially in disaster fields that currently have been required by many other fields,” he emphasized.
