“You (the freshmen) are now in the organization that organizes thousands of schools, 119 hospitals around Indonesia, and 23 National Heroes of Indonesia from Muhammadiyah. It indicates you are in the campus and organization that owns a remarkable tradition to be preserved in our hearts, thoughts, and actions”. That was a statement from Prof. Dr. Haedar Nashir, M.Si when delivering his remarks on the Student Orientation (Mataf) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) in Sportorium UMY, Monday (12/09).
The President of Muhammadiyah Central Board also added that in a valuable tradition, they should own several excellent characters. First, the noble characters (akhlaqul karimah) include Sidiq (truthfulness), Amanah (trustworthiness), and Fathonah (wisdom) whenever and wherever possible. Second, students’ ability to broaden their perspective with the knowledge that can bring them to be future intelligent activists. Third, students should expand their networks and roles. “Lastly, be a person who has maturity, self-responsibility, and to be dutiful and obedient to parents (birrul walidain),” said the UMY Professor of Sociology.
Prof Haedar also prompted 5,555 incoming students to consider Muhammadiyah as their foundation to live in Islamic civilization. By raising the theme “Prophetic Values Manifestation to Enlighten the Intelligent Person”, the student orientation was directly opened by the Rector of UMY, Prof. Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P., IPM.
