The Association for Communication Science Department in Muhammadiyah-‘Aisyiyah Higher Education Institutions (APIK PTMA) held a webinar on Thursday (28/04). The webinar entitled “Senggol Bestie: Tik Tok utilization for campus promotion programs”. Tik Tok is currently becoming a popular social media platform for the younger generation because its users are basically teenagers. The demographic status of the Tik Tok users made this platform suitable for the promotion on students’ enrollment.

“The Campus Public Relation and Administration Bureau should manage Tik Tok contents. Tik Tok can be a publication media that is compatible with its active user trends,” said Rudianto, the Vice Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU).

Indonesian teenagers between 14-24 years old tend to be Tik Tok users. Tik Tok has become one popular platform for prospective students based on this user segmentation. It encourages several MHEIs to utilize Tik Tok. Meanwhile, Tik Tok is also identified with its ‘cheesy’ character that raises challenges in creativity and ethics.

The resource persons of the webinar were Erwan Sudiwijaya (Communication Science lecturer of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta), Nurudin (Communication Science lecturer of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang), Agung Tirta Wibawa (Communication Science lecturer of Universitas Muhammadiyah Bandung), and Muhammad Najih Farihanto (Communication Science lecturer of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan). Besides Rudianto, Muhammad Himawan Sutanto also became a keynote speaker as the Chairman of APIK PTMA. “To reach FYP, we should understand the trend, prepare production well, and know the audience,” said Najih.

Fajar Junaedi from UMY led the agenda as the moderator. Fajar explained that contents from MHEIs that reach FYP triggered the idea to conduct the webinar. One hundred and ten participants followed the webinar on the last Ramadhan.

Subuh Awarded From Sandiaga Uno: From Final Assignment in UMY

Subuh Awarded From Sandiaga Uno: From Final Assignment in UMY

Subuh (‘Miracle at Dawn’) movie received appreciation on Friday (22/04). The movie was selected to be a Family Sunday Movie in the April 2022 edition by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf). Sandiaga Uno, the Minister of Kemenparekaf announced that in the total submission of 109, Subuh became two selected movies to be awarded.

The interesting points in the movie production start from the final assignment when the filmmaker is in the Communication Science of UMY that artwork becomes an outcome. It became a starting point for the movie production, the collaboration between Achmad Rezi Fahlevie and Muhammad Wahyu Saputra through Noise Films. Levie, the film director, Wahyu, the producer, and co-producer Budi Dwi Arifianto graduated from UMY.

Besides becoming a co-producer, Budi was also the supervisor. Levie narrated the movie’s creative process involving the supervisor’s guidance. “The first concept was a long taken without cutting, but in the pre-production process, there is an insight from the supervisor to include stronger conflicts,” said Levie, Wednesday (27/04).

The First Idea of Subuh Movie

Subuh started from his experience in Student Study Service (KKN) at a Magelang village where the majority of the community is Christians. In their daily activities, the community uses properties related to Muslims, including sarung (a garment made of a length of printed cloth wrapped about the waist) and peci (a black cap with a truncated cone). The Magelang people live with a high tolerance. “The concept is packaging film. There are a lot of movies about tolerance but Subuh differs in the delivery,” he said. The film production started during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 by implementing strict health protocol and was released at the beginning of 2021. It took place in one house with 13 crews and 2 actors.

Levie explained the concept based on his own experience in Cerita Masa Tua ‘An Old Story’ (2018) which highlighted semiotics. “The important point in creating a movie for the final assignment is a strong idea but simple. Besides graduating, we placed the goal to be personal branding to enter the industrial world and portfolio and the number of viewers,” said Levie to other students.

Various Awards

Previously, Subuh has been played in various film festivals and received several nominations and awards, including the 2021 1st Best Film in Universitas Andalas, Padang; Nominations for the 2021 Best Director in Klaten Film Festival; Nomination for the 2021 Best Script Writer in Klaten Film Festival; 2021 Best Film Editing in Klaten Film Festival, Nomination for 2021 Best Film in Klaten Film Festival, 2021 Best Movie in Artspiration Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta, and many other awards.
